How Old Do You Have to Be to Rent a Car in Hawaii?

You must be at least 18 years old to rent a car in Hawaii. Some car rental companies may require you to be 21 years old, so it’s always best to check with the company before making your reservation.

It’s important to note, that in order to rent a car as an 18-year-old, you’d need to have a valid college ID, a passport, or an international driver’s license to qualify. If you don’t have either of these documents, you won’t be able to rent a car.

Also, you will need a valid driver’s license from your home state or country, as well as a major credit card. Some car rental companies may also require you to have auto insurance.

Renting A Car Under 25 In Hawaii

If you’re under the age of 25, you may be charged a “young driver’s fee.” This fee is typically around $25 per day and is meant to offset the increased risk associated with young drivers.

Here is a list of rental car companies in Hawaii and their young driver’s fee policy:

  • Alamo: $25 per day (ages 21 to 24)
  • Enterprise: $25 per day (ages 18 to 24)
  • Fox Rent A Car: $20 to $30 per day (ages 19 to 24)
  • Hertz: $19 to $45 per day (ages 18 to 24)
  • National: $20 to $30 per day (ages 21 to 24)
  • Sixt: $15 to $35 per day (ages 21 to 24)
  • Thrifty: $25 to $35 per day (ages 20 to 24)
  • Dollar: $29 per day (ages 20 to 24)

As you can see, the young driver’s fee can vary depending on which rental car company you choose. Be sure to take this into account when budgeting for your trip.

Also, some restrictions may apply, such as:

  • You may only be able to rent economy or compact cars
  • You may have to put down a larger deposit
  • You may need to pay with a credit card and won’t be allowed to pay with a debit card
  • You may be required to purchase additional insurance

To avoid this fee, you can ask a friend or family member who is over the age of 25 to rent the car in their name. As long as they meet all of the rental requirements, they should be able to do so without any issues.

But what if you’re a tourist from another country? Well, the good news is that foreign visitors can indeed rent a car in the U.S, including Hawaii. However, you must be at least 21 years old and have a valid driver’s license from your home country that’s written in English.

However, age is not the only factor that you need to consider when renting a car.

Can you rent a car after age 75?

Yes, you can rent a car after age 75. However, some rental car companies may require you to have a doctor’s note or other medical documentation stating that you are healthy enough to drive.

Also, keep in mind that most insurance companies will not cover drivers over the age of 70, so you’ll likely have to purchase additional insurance from the rental car company.

This is just a general overview of the age requirements for renting a car in Hawaii. For more specific information, it’s always best to contact the rental car company directly.

What is the age limit to rent a car in Hawaii?

You must be at least 18 years old to rent a car in Hawaii. Some car rental companies may require you to be 21 years old, so it’s always best to check with the company before making your reservation. In terms of the upper age limit, there is no definitive answer. Some rental car companies may require you to have a doctor’s note or other medical documentation stating that you are healthy enough to drive.

Finally, keep in mind that most insurance companies don’t cover drivers above the age of 70, so you’ll almost certainly have to buy extra coverage from the rental car company.

Do You Need to Rent a Car in Hawaii?

Firstly, you might ask yourself, do you really need to rent a car in Hawaii? It ultimately depends on the type of vacation you’re planning. If you intend to stay around the Waikiki area, you might not need a car at all as public transportation, ride-sharing services, and walking can easily cover your needs.

However, if you plan on exploring multiple islands and their unique attractions, renting a car is a must. Having a vehicle gives you the flexibility to explore at your own pace. Plus, some of the best parts of Hawaii are found off the beaten path, accessible only by car.

Questions to Ask When Renting a Car in Hawaii

Once you’ve determined that you need a car rental, the next step is knowing what to ask when renting a car. Being prepared with the right questions will help ensure you get the best rental for your needs, and also avoid any potential unpleasant surprises during your trip.

Here are some important questions to consider:

  1. What’s the total cost, including any additional fees?
  2. What’s the fuel policy?
  3. Are there any mileage restrictions?
  4. What’s the policy on additional drivers?

Do I need insurance to rent a car in Hawaii?

Yes, you are required to have insurance when renting a car in Hawaii. You can either get insurance through the rental car company or through your own personal auto insurance policy.

If you have your own personal auto insurance policy, you’ll need to make sure that it covers rental cars. Not all policies do.

Also, even if your policy does cover rental cars, you may still be required to purchase additional insurance from the rental car company. This is usually in the form of Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) or Loss Damage Waiver (LDW).

These two types of insurance protect you financially in the event that the rental car is damaged or stolen.

Without either CDW or LDW, you would be fully responsible for paying for any damage to the rental car.

The cost of CDW and LDW can vary depending on the rental car company, so be sure to ask about it when making your reservation.

Can you rent a car without insurance? The simple answer is yes, but it’s not recommended. When renting a car, you have the option to either rely on your personal auto insurance, use the coverage provided by your credit card, or purchase coverage from the rental company.

However, if you don’t have auto insurance (which is very possible if you’re a foreign tourist), your options are to use your credit card’s coverage (if applicable) or buy insurance from the rental company. These policies cover damages to the rental vehicle, and some even include liability coverage for injuries or damages to other people or properties.

As you can see, there are a few things to keep in mind when renting a car in Hawaii if you’re under the age of 25 or over the age of 70. Be sure to do your research and budget accordingly to avoid any surprises.

What are the requirements to rent a car in Hawaii?

To rent a car in Hawaii, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old (21 years old for some rental companies)

Be aware of the local laws and regulations

There are some unique laws in Hawaii that you may not be familiar with. For example, it’s illegal to drive barefoot in Hawaii.

Take your time

The roads can be busy in Hawaii, so be sure to give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination.

If you’re not used to driving in heavy traffic, it may be best to avoid the rush hour if possible.

Yield pedestrians

In Hawaii, pedestrians always have the right of way. So, if you see a pedestrian crossing the street, be sure to yield. Failing to do so could result in a fine.

Signal on every turn

Another law to be aware of is the signaling law. In Hawaii, you’re required to signal 100 feet before making every turn, regardless of whether there are other cars around.

Let others pass if you’re driving slow

There are many long single-lane routes across Hawaii. If you’re driving slow, be sure to let others pass when it’s safe to do so.

Drive with your headlights on at all times

In Hawaii, it’s required by law to drive with your headlights on at all times, even during the day.

Wear a seatbelt

Observe the speed limit
