How Much Does it Cost to Rent a Car for a Week?

You can rent a car for a week as low as $231 per week ($33 per day) for a Compact car (Kia Rio or similar) and as low as $287 per week ($41 per day) for a Fullsize car (Nissan Altima or similar) or a Midsize SUV.

These rates include taxes & fees but do not include additional insurance or surcharges (renters under 25 will pay a “young driver’s fee”). When renting a car, you can expect to pay an additional $30-$50 per day in insurance or surcharges.

So, for a Compact car, the total cost of renting for a week would be $231 + ( $30 to $50 a day ) = between $441 to $581. And for a Fullsize car or Midsize SUV, the total cost of renting for a week would be $287 + ( $30 to $50 a day ) = between $497 to $637.

To get the best deal on a rental car, it is important to compare rates from different companies.

Here is a list of the best locations (with their costs) to rent a car for a week:

  1. Lost Angeles: starts at $402 per week (Compact car) or $457 per week (Fullsize/Midsize SUV)
  2. Boston: starts at $364 per week (Compact car) or $423 per week (Fullsize/Midsize SUV)
  3. San Francisco: starts at $418 per week (Compact car) or $611 per week (Fullsize/Midsize SUV)
  4. New York: starts at $484 per week (Compact car) or $591 per week (Fullsize/Midsize SUV)
  5. Denver: starts at $362 per week (Compact car) or $473 per week (Fullsize/Midsize SUV)
  6. Miami: starts at $231 per week (Compact car) or $287 per week (Fullsize/Midsize SUV)
  7. Orlando: starts at $382 per week (Compact car) or $415 per week (Fullsize/Midsize SUV)
  8. Chicago: starts at $454 per week (Compact car) or $503 per week (Fullsize/Midsize SUV)

As you can see, the cost of renting a car for a week can vary greatly depending on your location.

  • Mileage Fees.
  • Additional driver fees.
  • Gas prices.
  • Tolls and parking fees.

The type of car you choose.

When choosing a rental car, the type of vehicle you select will have the biggest impact on cost. As seen above, economy cars are the most affordable option, while luxury cars are the most expensive. Midsize SUVs and standard SUVs fall somewhere in the middle. Minivans and vans are also a great option for larger families or groups.

The size of the car.

The size of the car you select will also affect the cost of your rental. If you’re renting a car for the whole family, you’ll need a larger vehicle like an SUV or a minivan. If you’re just renting for yourself, a smaller car like an economy or midsize will suffice.

The length of your rental.

The longer you rent the car, the more it will cost. Most rental companies offer discounts for weekly and monthly rentals, so if you’re planning on using the car for an extended period of time, it’s best to take advantage of these discounts. Weekly rates are usually cheaper than daily or hourly rates.

The location of your rental.

The location of your rental can also affect the cost. If you’re renting in a major city, you can expect to pay more than if you’re renting in a smaller town or rural area. This is because there is more demand for rental cars in cities.

Whether or not you add insurance.

Most rental companies will offer some form of insurance, but it’s up to you whether or not you want to add it to your rental agreement. If you have your own auto insurance, you may not need to purchase additional insurance. However, if you don’t have auto insurance, or if your policy doesn’t cover rentals, you may want to purchase the insurance offered by the rental company.

Additional driver fees.

If you’re planning on having someone else drive the rental car, you’ll need to add them as an additional driver on your agreement. Most rental companies charge a daily fee for additional drivers, so be sure to factor this into your budget.

Mileage Fees.

Most rental companies charge a mileage fee if you go over the allotted miles for your rental. Be sure to ask about this fee before you rent, as it can add up quickly if you’re planning on doing a lot of driving.

Gas prices.

You’ll also need to factor in the cost of gas. Most rental companies require that you return the car with a full tank of gas. Prices vary depending on where you’re renting, but you can expect to pay around $50 for a full tank of gas.

Tolls and parking fees.

If you’re planning on using the car to travel, you’ll need to factor in the cost of tolls and parking fees. Tolls can vary greatly depending on where you’re traveling, so it’s best to check with the rental company beforehand. Parking fees also vary depending on the location, but you can typically expect to pay around $20 per day.

How to Save Money When Renting A Car For A Week?

There are a few ways you can save money on your rental car:

  • Book in advance.
  • Compare prices.
  • Look for discounts.
  • Pickup from an off-airport location.
  • Check for hidden fees.

Book in advance.

One of the best ways to save money on your rental car is to book in advance. Most rental companies offer discounts for early bookings, so you can save a significant amount by booking ahead of time.

Compare prices.

Another way to save money is to compare prices. There are a number of websites that allow you to compare the prices of different rental companies, so you can be sure you’re getting the best deal.

Look for discounts.

Many rental companies offer discounts for AAA members, seniors, military personnel, and more. Be sure to ask about any discounts that may apply to you.

Pickup from an off-airport location.

If you’re renting from an airport location, you can expect to pay a premium. To save money, consider picking up your rental car from an off-airport location.

Check for hidden fees.

Be sure to read the fine print when you’re renting a car. Some rental companies charge hidden fees, so it’s important to be aware of what you’re being charged for.
